Ballerinas are among some of the toughest athletes in the world. Beneath the beautiful tulle and silk ribbon costumes are bodies of pure muscle, shaped by graceful gravity-defying movements. For this reason, the art form has always been a muse to the fitness community. The Barre method, for example, which incorporates ballet exercises, has been an exercise mainstay scientifically proven for success and effectiveness with roots dating back to 1959.
Fast forward to present day and newer exercise methods have formed using the same dance philosophy. Even fitness brand Under Armour jumped on board, tapping American Ballet Theatre dancer Misty Copeland for a recent campaign.
Barre ballet workouts are extremely popularity among celebrities, fashion insiders and models (especially from Victoria’s Secret).
Mary Helen Bowers, a former New York City Ballet dancer who trained Natalie Portman for Black Swan, used Barre ballet workout method to improve posture and target trouble areas such as arms, inner thighs and the back using your own bodyweight and techniques such as various ballet positions, elegant movements.
Jennifer Aniston caused a social media frenzy this week when she took over beauty brand Living Proof’s Instagram and shared a glimpse of her healthy lifestyle. The former Friends star revealed that she keeps in shape with barre workouts – and she’s not the first celebrity to turn to the fitness craze, with celebrities including Madonna and Jourdan Dunn staying fit with barre core routines.
A ballet-inspired workout, barre uses a mixture of pilates, yoga and dance techniques to tone your body as well as improving posture, with many fitness fans claiming to see results after just five classes. We take a look at why you should try out a barre personal training workout or barre fitness class.
It can help with weight loss
The workouts target the largest muscle groups in the body, building more lean muscle mass and raising your metabolic rate, to help you burn more calories. Barre exercises focus on the lower body and are designed to help you lose the pounds, as well as reducing cellulite.
It will leave you toned from head to toe
It’s a highly efficient workout because it targets multiple muscle groups at a time – exercises often consist of small movements including holding, pulsing and stretching, designed to work even the smallest muscle.
It increases flexibility
The workouts aim to make you both strong and flexible, elongating muscles which can help reduce the risk of injury.
It can lead to abs
Barre routines involve pilates-based abdominal work and floor barre exercises to strengthen your core. Not only can this leave you with toned abs, but a strong core can reduce the risk of overusing your lower back muscles and putting additional stress on other joints.
It will help you burn calories on a long-term basis
The routines are designed to burn fat and build muscle at the same time – strong muscles burn more calories, so you’ll keep getting rid of the energy long after the end of the class.
Here are the Top 10 Benefits of Barre:
Makes you stronger: The isometric contractions that make up the bulk of a barre class occur when the muscle tenses without changing length. What’s wonderful about the one-inch movements is that you can hold a posture and benefit from continuously engaging the muscle, but you also get a mini-recovery with each pulse, so you can stay in the hold longer.
Targets multiple muscle groups at once: It’s a highly efficient workout since you’re doing two to four movements—holding, pulsing, stretching—at a time in each move. Working all these areas at once also helps raise the heart rate.
Improves mind and body concentration: The smaller movements in a barre class can bring a new level of awareness to the body that you don’t get in regular strength workouts. Barre can improve muscular activation for frequently underused muscles by strengthening the neuromuscular (mind-body) connection.
Increases endurance: The constant strength training also helps with increasing your heart rate and endurance. The small movements are done fast-paced style, with short breaks here and there to catch your breath.
It’s fun: Because its incorporated with dance, barre is a fun and exciting way to way workout. The atmosphere will make the workout enjoyable, so you’ll want to keep coming back for more!
Weight loss: The barre targets the largest muscle groups in the body (like the thighs and glutes). The larger the muscle, the more calories burned. As you continue, you will begin to build more lean muscle mass, raising your metabolic rate, which can help you produce more energy and burn more calories.
Core strength: The beauty of the barre is that you engage your core the entire time – so even if you are working the arms or thighs, you are always engaging, and therefore strengthening, the core as well. A strong core can increase your performance in all other activities in your life, whether you’re playing tennis or just lifting your groceries, pets or children.
Reduces cellulite: Aerobic activity is a key factor in getting rid of cellulite! Barre exercises are fat blasting; it focuses on the lower body and designed to help you drop pounds. If you want to fit into your skinny jeans, have killer legs and a great looking butt, or you just want to go from a good shape to a better one, barre is for you!
Improves flexibility: Ballet stretches are a major part of the session done at the end of each interval, so the muscles are elongated, bulk is reduced and therefore balance and alignment are achieved.
Increases bone health: The more you practice barre, your muscles get stronger. The constant tension and resistance placed on the muscles has an effect on bones that makes them stronger, which is key to warding off osteoporosis with age.
